What Do Crane Flies Eat?

Crane flies are generally not known for feeding heavily as adults. Their primary diet consists of nectar from flowers, though some species of crane flies may not feed at all in their adult stage, as they live only for a few days to a week and focus mainly on reproduction.

The larvae of crane flies, however, are much more active feeders and can cause more noticeable effects. These larvae, also called "leatherjackets," typically feed on decaying organic matter, plant roots, and grasses. In some cases, the larvae can damage lawns, agricultural crops, or plants in gardens due to their feeding habits.

So, while adult crane flies may sip nectar, the larvae are the ones that actively consume plant material and organic matter.

Do Crane Flies Eat Mosquitoes?

Crane flies do not eat mosquitoes. While crane flies and mosquitoes may share similar habitats, especially in areas with standing water, their diets are quite different.

Crane flies, particularly in their adult stage, primarily feed on nectar from flowers, though some species may not feed at all. Their primary goal as adults is reproduction, and they only live for a short period—usually just a few days or a week.

On the other hand, mosquitoes are blood-feeding insects (for the females) and do not form any predator-prey relationship with crane flies.

Crane fly larvae (leatherjackets) are herbivorous and feed on decaying organic material and plant roots, while mosquito larvae live in water and feed on algae and organic matter in the water. Therefore, there is no dietary overlap between crane flies and mosquitoes, and crane flies do not eat mosquitoes.
