If you’ve done any research into exterminating mice or rats, you’ve likely come across the use of mouse traps as well as the use of bait stations. As far as which is most effective in eliminating rodents from your home, we believe that a combination of the two provides the best immediate and long-term results. This is why Miche Pest Control utilizes both traps and bait stations in order to gain control over rodents that may be in and around your home.
What is the difference between traps and bait stations?
The biggest difference between traps and bait stations is how long they take to eliminate rodents. Rodents that consume the poison found in bait stations can be expected to die within 1 to 2 weeks of consumption. Traps, however, instantly capture any rodents that they come into contact with. The other major difference between the two is that traps are placed inside of your home, while bait stations are placed around the exterior perimeter. Traps are used inside to capture any rodents that may already be present inside your home, whereas bait stations are used to capture rodents before they make their way inside.
Can bait stations be placed inside my home?
While you may find that other companies place bait stations inside homes, we do not believe that this is the best method for eliminating and preventing rodent activity. With placing bait stations inside, you have far less control over where rodents die, and therefore run the risk of finding dead rodents in hard-to-reach places, such as behind appliances, inside walls, or even inside of your HVAC system. This can lead to costly extractions and repairs inside your home that can easily be prevented by placing only traps inside and bait stations outside.
I have kids and/or pets. Are bait stations dangerous?
At Miche Pest Control, we use tamper-resistant bait stations that are designed to be tough enough to keep out children, as well as any curious cats or dogs. Locked inside these bait stations is fresh bait along with a concrete block to hold them in place. While the entrances to the bait stations are large enough for rats and mice to gain entry to, they are small enough to keep out any birds or larger animals.
What kind of traps do you use inside?
To gain control over any existing mice or rats inside your home, we use various types of traps, such as glue traps, snap traps, and multi-catch traps. Our highly-skilled technicians will determine which traps will best fit your needs and preferences before strategically placing them around your home.
Snap traps are likely what you first think of when you think about mouse traps. Snap traps kill rodents instantly upon contact and do require the disposal of the dead rodent.
Glue traps capture and hold in place any rodents that come into contact with their surface. Once captured, the rodent will likely die of natural causes, such as dehydration, starvation, or suffocation. If you are concerned about pets or small children getting caught in a snap trap, or about having to dispose of dead rodents, glue traps are a great option.
Multi-catch traps, which can also be used as catch-and-release traps, are the most humane form of rodent trapping. Instead of killing rodents upon contact, multi-catch traps allow you to later release the rodents back into the outdoors.
